RWA Architects Awarded Two 2013 AIA Cincinnati CRAN Awards

By | News

RWA Architects was recognized at the 5th annual American Institute of Architects (AIA) Cincinnati Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN) Awards Ceremony on Thursday May 2nd. The awards ceremony included a presentation by Juror Chair John Connell, AIA of the 2morrow Studio in Warren, Vermont and founder of the AIA’s CRAN program. This year RWA Architects received two awards; an Honor Award for a private estate located in the Midwest, in the New Custom Home category, and a Merit Award for a Historic Tudor Renovation located in the City of Cincinnati, in the Architectural Interior category. Of the Private Estate, jurors commented, “the design delivers a sophisticated and very nuanced use of a classical palette that is rarely attempted in an era of limited resources and micro-apartments. The result is a timeless estate plan that exhibits many of architecture’s essential virtues. Residential design of this caliber has, and will, stand the test of time.” Of the Historic Tudor residence, the kitchen in particular not only returned the essential space to a design appropriate to the vintage of the home, but it improved it’s livability and accommodates for current lifestyles. “Deft use of natural light and cabinet details raises the design solution above the rest,” said jurors. Since CRAN’s inception in 2009, RWA has received 17 design awards. RWA Architects considers it an honor and a privilege to be recognized among many unique and excellent submittals. These awards reaffirm our belief that the quality architecture and unmatched service you receive from RWA is among the best in Cincinnati and the surrounding area. Three RWA projects were recognized at the 4th annual American Institute of Architects (AIA) Cincinnati CRAN (Custom Residential Architects Network) Awards ceremony held on the evening of May 3, 2012. Previously known as the CORA Awards, this now brings the total amount of RWA projects that have received recognition from this event to 15 since it’s inception in 2009. With this residence having the distinguishing characteristic of being the 1st LEED Platinum home in Cincinnati, certified by the U.S. Green Building Council and receiving full tax abatement for fifteen years from the City of Cincinnati it was quite an honor to be recognized for the design of the home as well. RWA also received a Merit Award for a new private residence in Indian Hill and an Honorable Mention Award for a kitchen renovation for a private residence in Hyde Park. Receiving these awards from a distinguished panel of jurors from around the country, led by Mark Hutker, AIA, with so many quality projects submitted, is an honor and a privilege and it reaffirms our belief that the quality architecture and the unmatched service that you receive from RWA Architects is among the best in Cincinnati and the surrounding area. Housetrends Article Includes RWA Project

By | News
In the November/December issue of Housetrends, on newsstands now, a new house designed by RWA Architects is included in an article that highlights the lower levels of several homes in the Cincinnati area. The article refers to RWA’s project as “Sunny Disposition,” and focuses on the many features that make the lower level of the home equally important as its other levels. The number of families that spend a substantial amount of time in their basements continues to increase, and they’re placing a high priority on making the lower level an extension of the home. The article not only highlights this trend, but emphasizes the ways RWA’s design maximizes function for the homeowner.

Cincinnati Preservation Award

By | News

RWA Receives a 2011 Cincinnati Preservation Association (CPA) Award.

Every year, the CPA’s Preservation Awards Ceremony recognizes outstanding accomplishments in local preservation activities in various categories and this year, on November 13, 2011, RWA received 1 of only 2 residential awards handed out in the “Rehabilitation” category.  A CPA award is given to buildings in the Cincinnati area that have been substantially restored or rehabilitated and comply with the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation.

The award-winning project involved a whole-house renovation of the 1926 Tudor Revival Style home, “Lilybanks,” in Hyde Park.  Having already undergone many renovations, additions and utility upgrades, it was imperative to the new Owners that all of the remodeling fit seamlessly with the “Tudor Revival Style” of the existing house.  So, with that goal in mind RWA, working alongside the Owners, who felt passionately about maintaining the integrity of the original house, and the construction team, set out to come up with all of the best possible solutions.

These solutions included both big and small design decisions such as painted cabinets with leaded glass, layered crown mouldings, paneled walls, and honed white marble slab countertops in the Kitchen.

Wainscot subway tile, hexagon floor tile and one-piece carrara marble slabs were implemented into Master Bathroom.

Throughout the house, interior doors, hinges and hardware were salvaged and reused.  The original stair was brought back to the basement while cabinets that were not original to the house were removed.  Also, all original leaded glass windows and exterior doors were removed, repaired and refinished.  Certainly posing the biggest challenge, the house was completely rewired, received all new plumbing and a new geothermal HVAC system with virtually no visual impact to the first, second and third floors.

All of these decisions and changes resulted in a home that is ready to move into the future, but is defiantly holding onto it’s past, ensuring it’s character, durability and sustainability.
